Things to Keep in Mind

Self-Assessment

Fitness and Health Assessment

  • I am aware that the trip requires a moderate to high level of fitness due to the boat ride and the climb of over 600 steps to the top.
  • I have considered my current physical fitness and am confident in my ability to walk on uneven terrain and climb steep stairs.
  • I have consulted with my doctor if I have any underlying medical conditions (e.g., heart, respiratory, or mobility issues) that may impact my ability to take the trip.
  • I am aware that the boat ride can be rough, and I may experience seasickness, especially in bad weather conditions.
  • I am prepared for possible weather-related challenges such as high winds or rain during the boat journey and climb.

Prior to Your Trip:

  • The sailing to the Skellig Islands lasts approximately 50 minutes. We recommend that anyone prone to seasickness take seasickness tablets before embarking on their trip.
  • Warm clothing should be worn during the sailing – even on a warm day the boat trip can be cool.
  • Be prepared for rain or sea spray on your journey. While we do provide waterproof gear on the boat, we recommend that passengers have their own waterproof clothing for the island.
  • Good quality walking boots or sturdy footwear with ankle support for the climb.
  • Extra layers in case of weather changes, such as a fleece or insulated jacket.
  • Bring sunscreen and a hat even on cloudy days.
  • Water (preferably in a reusable, sustainable bottle to minimize plastic waste).
  • Bring drinks and some light snacks for your trip. Please remember to bring your litter off the island.

On the Island:

  • The boatman will provide instructions on how to disembark the boat once you arrive at the Island, it is important that you follow these instructions.
  • Note:
    • There will be sea motion at the pier and the boat will be moving when you are stepping off, so care is needed.
  • You will be given approximately 2.5 hours on the Island.
  • There are toilet facilities located at the base of the Island.
  • The hike up to the monastery takes approximately 30 minutes (depending on your level of fitness).
  • Only two points on the trail have handrails. The rest of the trail is unguarded you will therefore need to take care when climbing the steps.
  • If you wish to take a photograph as you climb the steps:
    •  Stop climbing;
    •  Make sure your footing and surrounding area is stable;
    • Do not obstruct the trail for other visitors;
    • Put your camera away once the photo has been taken.
  • Do not walk with your hands in your pockets. Your hands act as a natural balancing aid when you walk.
  • Carry a small backpack with both straps over your shoulders.
  • If you suffer from heart problems, Vertigo, or any other medical condition where stress or loss of breath would be an issue, we recommend that you do not climb to the monastery.
  • If during your ascent to the monastery, you feel disoriented or are short of breath, sit on the steps and when ready make your way back to the base of the steps.
